Chemical fire at Toledo Refinery in Oregon prompts evacuations

Fire in a line of the chemical Toluene at the Toledo Refinery in Oregon forced crews to evacuate nearby homes Sunday night.

According to Oregon police and fire dispatch crews initially believed they were responding to a fire in a rail car at the Refinery. Following reports indicated it may have been a natural gas line before crews determined it was the chemical. Toluene in frequently used in paint thinners.

Oregon Police Chief Mike Navarre says crews now believe two small explosions at about 8:30pm may have sparked the fire on the property of the Toledo Refinery. An exact cause for the fire has not yet been determined. They closed down portions of Pickle Road to keep people away from the blaze.
